Sacco's mistake is that he thinks the standalone media player market (i.e. iPod) will die out before the market for cell phones that aren't smart.

Always remember that Apple is skating to where the puck is going, not where it is today.

The real lock-in is the iPhone's ecosystem (horrible word, I know) is vastly better than the competition.

Apple is not likely to differentiate the iPhone with multiple SKUs (like Vista). The funny thing is analysts seem to be deaf to what Apple says on this particular topic. Such as Tim Cook in their latest financial report a few weeks back. They say they like the one piece of hardware that is differentiated by software.

Maybe there's room for an iPhone nano, that doesn't have a data plan. But WIFI without a plan? How many wireless connections out there allow free access? How many are not locked down now? (And in Florida, you can be arrested for trespassing on someone's wireless connection even if it's not password protected.)

As for the assumption the iPod market is saturated, the analysts have been saying that since about 2002 or 2003. And yet Apple keeps increasing their numbers. Now those numbers are slowing down in the US market, but growing significantly in the international market.

Apple isn't about to change its ways until a REAL slowdown. Not a slowdown analysts keep hoping will happen so people will think they are really good at this prognostication game. In fact, they tend to be wrong about Apple way more than they are right about them. How else do you explain people still trying to tell Apple to get into the razor-thin profit margin netbook market? "Be more like Dell." That's what they keep saying. And Apple keeps saying, "No thanks, we like our business model." But the analysts are deaf to it.

[...] “Bernstein Analyst Announces iPhone Nano, iPhone Touch” is a classic example of an industry analyst disappearing up his own ass and using Google Keywords to decide what to write about. ” The other 83% of mobile handsets are largely sold without data service, except possibly text messaging.
“Apple’s iPhone has so far addressed the data-centric smartphone market only–in fact, in most countries where it is sold, a data service plan is a pre-requisite for buyers...”

There's one small problem with this statement, and basing the "announcement" of products on it.

Its not true. More than half of iPhone purchases are by non-smartphone owners.

"The iPhone is expanding the smartphone market. About 50% of iPhones replaced conventional mobile phones, 40% replaced smartphones, and 10% replaced nothing."
