Based on all your columns John, Palm's Pre is a hit. All the negatives you have shown are
pre-PRE.

I haven't seen how many Google phones have been sold. So I find it strange that independent developers would spend their stretched R&D on an OS based on Linux, free ware, ripe for theft, that only uses T-Mobile. I guess it's for International.

Palm uses Sprint (which allows RIMM), but still has a strong Business usage. iPhone is still tied to AT&T (which also allows RIMM)

A recession generates a lot of new idea's. If Pre lives up to expectations, the partner apps will be there.

Cable still needs their Cell for their Quad plan. Or they will lose (more) to Telco.
They may just get the Sprint partnership moving again.
Palm Pre will help.

Its a big market for existing and more importantly new smartphone users. Palm needs to get this out the door asap and I bet the developers will come to the platform.
