Sun Stops Christmas From Coming

We are preconfigured for the downturn.”

Sun CEO Jon Schwartz, Oct. 13, 2008

“Sun Microsystems Aligns Business with Global Economic Climate.” That’s the title of the press release Sun issued this morning, but a better one would have been, “Sun Microsystems Aligns Workforce with Unemployment Benefits,” because that’s really what it’s done. This morning, the company said it will sack up to 18 percent of its workforce as it struggles to regain its footing after a series of dismal quarters. The move is expected to save the company $700 million to $800 million.

From the release:

Sun is announcing a global workforce reduction and alignment of its Software organization into new business groups–Application Platform Software, Systems Platforms, and Cloud Computing & Developer Platforms–with a focus on boosting open source momentum and growing new sectors of the market who view technology as a competitive weapon.

Sun’s new organizational alignment is a recognition of the comprehensive role software plays in the Company’s growth strategy.”

Hell of a way to spin mass layoffs, which could see up to 6,000 employees filing for unemployment insurance.

Said Jon Schwartz, the company’s CEO, “We’re taking sharp, decisive action to align ourselves to a new economic reality, and also to amplify our investment in the way the world is heading.”

Now what was that you were saying about Sun (JAVA) being “preconfigured for the downturn,” again?

Andy Bechtolsheim got out just in time….
